About the region:

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee is a unique and distinctive coffee that originates from the Sidamo region, located in southern Ethiopia, bordering Kenya and Somalia. This region is renowned for its geographic diversity, ranging from the central highlands to the southern mountains, with an average altitude of 1,330 meters above sea level. The Yirgacheffe is a micro-zone of Sidamo, located between the towns of Dilla and Agere Maryam.

It was in the Yirgacheffe area that the particularity of the cafes was discovered. Mr. Hiwot, who worked for Besse & Co. in 1960, noticed that coffees from the Melkalole region had unique characteristics, such as uniform size, bluish color and a fruity cup with floral and aromatic notes. Very distinctive citrus fruit, as well as high acidity. Based on this discovery, it was decided to market this coffee in a differentiated way, without mixing it with other Sidamo coffees.

Subsequently, 20,000 hectares of coffee were planted in the Yirgacheffe region with the aim of replicating these unique characteristics, and the Yirgacheffe appellation was created. However, in the case of commercial coffees, those that exhibit certain characteristics in the cup are classified as Yirgacheffe.

Yirgacheffe coffee is grown spontaneously on hillsides or in coffee gardens, small plots where each family also plants fruit trees and vegetables. It is also grown on larger plots and processed in washing stations scattered throughout the country. In addition to being an important element of the local economy, coffee is also a protagonist of the social and cultural life of the region.

In the cup, Yirgacheffe coffee stands out with its aromas of cherry and jasmine, mixed with notes of dark chocolate and sweetness. Regarding the aroma, we can appreciate notes of jasmine and citrus.
